Chengdu Fan Zeng started painting and calligraphy

Fan Zeng (July 5, 1938-), also known as Shiyi, was born in Nantong, Jiangsu Province. He is a contemporary Chinese Confucian scholar, thinker, master of Chinese studies, calligraphy and painting master, writer, and poet. He is currently the dean of the Institute of Chinese Painting at Peking University, a lifelong researcher at the Chinese Academy of Arts, the only tenured professor at Nankai University and Nantong University, a "Special Advisor on Multiculturalism" to UNESCO, an honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of Glasgow, UK, and an Honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of Alberta in Canada. He is a contemporary Chinese cultural master who integrates poetry, calligraphy, painting, literature, history and philosophy, as well as Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. He has written numerous works in his life, including about 150 kinds of poetry, calligraphy, painting and philosophy, 119 of which are collected by the National Library. He advocated "return to classics and nature" and practiced the aesthetic principle of "taking poetry as the soul and calligraphy as the bones". He made great contributions to the development of Chinese painting and pioneered the "neoclassical" art. In 1984, the permanent Fan Zeng Art Museum was established in Okayama County, Japan; in 2007, the Fan Zeng Art Museum of Nantong University was unveiled.
