The BBQ Culture in Hawaii

Having lived in Hawaii for a few years, I’ve come to love the local BBQ culture. As a Chinese resident, there are certain restaurants that really remind me of the flavors back home. Here are a few authentic Chinese BBQ spots that I frequently visit — you definitely don’t want to miss them!

1. Ling Ling BBQ

Located in Honolulu, Ling Ling BBQ is a go-to for me. Every time I visit, I have to get their char siu (叉烧) and roast duck. The char siu is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, while the roast duck has perfectly crispy skin and juicy meat — it’s simply heavenly! Prices are quite reasonable, usually ranging from $10 to $15 per dish, making it perfect for family dinners.

2. Little Hong Kong BBQ

If you’re near the harbor, check out Little Hong Kong BBQ. Their Hainan chicken rice is a must-try and one of my personal favorites. Whenever I go there with my family, we pile our plates high with the succulent chicken accompanied by fragrant rice. The price is around $12 to $18, which is quite a steal.

3. Jia Jia BBQ

Jia Jia BBQ is situated in Aiea, and their BBQ meat platter is something you absolutely must try. Every bite is unforgettable! The ambiance is cozy, making it a great spot to catch up with friends. Expect to pay around $15 to $25, and you’ll definitely get a hefty portion.
